Abstract

Purpose: This study was to describe how the domestic violence perpetrators experience domestic violence. Method: Focus group discussion were used to collect data and a grounded theory approach was used for the analysis. Study participants were seven Korean men. Results: This study revealed seven themes and central phenomena describing and checking the association of themes. The seven themes were a) communication problems due to mistrust of husbands` behavior. b) husbands want to be respected from wives. c) mistrust of wives d) limitation of patience. e) husbands stated that they are victims of domestic violence. f) husbands try to control their anger during argue. g) Husbands try to keep their family. Central phenomena: Men try to do their best to keep their family. Conclusion: Domestic violence has significant influence on family life. Effective nonviolent communicational programs should be provided for couple. Effective anger control program should be provided for men. Domestic violence preventional programs should be provided for family members. Nurses should access the needs of members of the families and then plan program based on needs, which are related to individual domestic violence issues. The outcome of this study can be applied as grounded work. In nursing intervention it can help understand domestic violence perpetrators which improve family quality of life.
